International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements

International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM

IFOAM is the worldwide umbrella organization for the organic agriculture movement, representing over 800 member organizations in more than 100 countries all over the world. IFOAM membership is open to associations of producers, processors, traders and consultants as well as to institutions involved in research and training committed to organic agriculture. Research in organic agriculture has been a priority for IFOAM from its beginning. The coordination of research was actually the reason why IFOAM was founded in 1972, in Versailles, France.

In 2013, TIPI - the Technology and Innovation Platform of IFOAM -  was founded as an Action Network of the IFOAM. Its mission is to engage and involve all stakeholders that benefit from organic agriculture research; to set a research agenda setting by a grassroots network approach;  to foster international collaboration in organic agriculture research; to facilitate exchange of scientific knowledge of organic food and farming systems; and to help practitioners disseminate, apply and implement innovations and scientific knowledge consistent with the principles of organic agriculture. For more information see the TIPI pages at this website.

IFOAM Conferences

The first IFOAM International Scientific Conference took place in Sissach, Switzerland in 1977 and since that time, IFOAM has organized scientific conferences in conjunction with its Organic World Congresses in collaboration with local research institutions as hosts. Scientists and researchers from all over the world attend these conferences to share the latest developments in the dynamic and growing field of organic agriculture. Proceedings of the conferences are published by the organizing organization or by IFOAM. Since 2005, the IFOAM Conferences (now called Organic World Congress) have taken place in cooperation with the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research ISOFAR (www.isofar.org).
