Géza Kovács: In memory

Hungarian researcher Dr. Géza Kovács died suddenly on 21 June 2012. A Senior Scientist at the Agricultural Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Mártonvásár, Kovács served as Curator of the Cereal Genebank.


In that capacity, he was active in organic plant breeding as a project leader at the Department of Genetic Resources and Organic Plant Breeding at HAS. He managed several national and international funded projects in the field of plant science. Most recently, Kovács was an active participant in the European Union funded project on Strategies for Organic and Low-Input Integrated Breeding and Management (SOLIBAM). He published over 150 articles and book chapters during his career. His breeding program took a sophisticated approach that used interspecific composite crosses and synthetic hexaploids. While his research was on-going at the time of his death, it was influential of other wheat breeding programs.

Kovács died after a brief illness at the age of 56. He is survived by this wife, two sons, his mother, and other relatives, along with many friends and colleagues.
