New publication: Organic crop breeding

Organic Crop Breeding is a new collection of articles published by Professor Edith T. Lammerts van Bueren of Wageningen University and Professor Jim Myers, Plant Breeding at Oregon State University.

The editors offer an overview and survey of important topics relevant to plant breeders who are developing varieties for organic conditions. Over 50 co-authors contributed chapters a wide range of subjects, including breeding for disease resistance under organic management, for weed suppression, and for efficient uptake of nutrients. Participatory plant breeding is explored as an approach. The philosophical, legal, political, economic and institutional contexts and consequences of organic plant breeding are also covered in a pair of chapters.

Several of the chapters are crop specific and provide examples and case studies of on-going organic breeding programs and the related research into traits desirable for organic farming conditions. Among the crops featured are wheat, maize (corn), rice, soybean, faba bean, potato, tomato, brassicas, and onions. Most of the studies are of European and North American programs. However, the rice chapter involves a case study based in the Philipines.
