Research and innovation for organic food companies

Report from the TP Organics session at BIOFACH Science Day on 12 February 2016.

The European Technology Platform for Organic Food and Farming TP Organics ( and TIPI, the Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM – Organics International organised for the 4th time the BIOFACH Science Day.

The morning session focussed on innovation by European organic food companies. The session also served to explore how the European Commission can better support organic food companies, in particular in the framework of the European Food Research Area, which the European Commission will build over the next years.

One of the main outcomes of the discussion was that more research is needed to translate the requirements of the organic regulations in terms of food processing, such as “processing with care” and “guaranteeing the vital qualities of the product” into practice.

Differences in interpretation of these requirements across the Member States are hampering the development of the organic sector. A Code of Practice is needed that sets the frame for developing innovative yet “careful” technologies.
